How much does a website cost in Canada in 2026: cost drivers by site type and a budget checklist

article

How much a website costs in Canada depends mostly on five things: how many unique page types it needs, whether it runs in English and French, whether it sells online, what it connects to (CRM, booking, payments) and who produces the content. A one-page landing page sits at the low end of a studio's range, a bilingual corporate site in the middle, and an online store with integrations at the top. Below we break down each cost driver, the three main site types, the running costs that come after launch and how to write a brief that gets you an accurate quote. At Marketing MIX we contact you within 24 hours of receiving your brief to discuss scope and next steps.

Why website quotes in Canada differ so much

Two quotes for "a website" often describe two different scopes. One price may cover a ready-made theme with your logo; another covers research, custom design, bilingual content, SEO setup and training. Before you compare numbers, compare what each quote includes.

In our experience the gap usually comes from these points:

  • Research and structure. A studio that studies your market, competitors and audience first spends more hours before design starts, and the site is built around what your customers search for.
  • Template or custom design. A theme saves design hours; a custom design is drawn for your brand and your conversion path.
  • Content. Some quotes assume you supply every text and photo. Others include copywriting, translation and photo selection.
  • SEO and analytics setup. Meta tags, structured data, redirects from the old site, Search Console and analytics take time and are often left out of cheap quotes.
  • Support after launch. Updates, backups and small edits are either included for a period or billed separately.

What drives the budget: 7 cost factors

A website budget is the sum of design, development, content and setup hours, and each factor below adds hours. The table shows what each one changes and the question you should answer in your brief.

AccessibilityDesign and code checks against WCAG 2.0 Level AADoes your organization in Ontario have 50 or more employees?

Accessibility can be a legal requirement. Since January 1, 2021, Ontario requires businesses and non-profits with 50 or more employees to make public websites conform to WCAG 2.0 Level AA, with exceptions for live captions and pre-recorded audio descriptions (Government of Ontario). If you sell to customers in Quebec, check the French-language requirements for commercial content with the Office québécois de la langue française before you plan the French version.

How much does a Shopify website cost in Canada?

A Shopify store has two parts: the platform subscription and the work of setting up the store. Shopify's Canadian pricing page on September 27, 2026 listed these plans (Shopify Canada pricing):

Shopify planPaid yearlyPaid monthlyOnline card rate, from
Basic$37 CAD/mo$49 CAD/mo2.8% + 30¢
Grow$99 CAD/mo$132 CAD/mo2.6% + 30¢
Advanced$389 CAD/mo$517 CAD/mo2.4% + 30¢

The subscription covers the platform. Theme customization, product import, apps, payment and shipping setup, French translation and SEO are separate project work. Check the current prices on Shopify's site before you budget, since plans change.

Hidden costs after launch

Running costs are the recurring expenses that keep a website online, secure and bringing leads. Include them in the first-year budget:

  • Domain renewal for your .ca or .com address.
  • Hosting, including backups and an SSL certificate.
  • Licences and apps: premium plugins, themes, e-commerce apps, form and booking tools.
  • Support and updates: CMS and plugin updates, security fixes, small edits.
  • Content: new case studies, blog posts, seasonal offers and translation of each update into French.
  • Traffic: SEO and advertising. A new site needs visitors; see what drives the cost of SEO in Canada and our SEO promotion service.

How to write a brief so the estimate is accurate

An accurate estimate needs a brief that fixes scope, languages and materials. Our online brief asks for exactly this:

  1. Service and goal: landing page, corporate site or online store; what the site must achieve (leads, sales, trust, replacing an old site).
  2. Organization and competitors: your current site and two or three competitors you compare yourself with.
  3. Target audience: who buys, where they live, which language they use.
  4. Project structure and languages: the list of sections and whether you need English, French or more.
  5. Available materials: logo, brand book, corporate colours and fonts, photos, texts, video.
  6. Technical requirements: integrations, payments, booking, CRM.
  7. Design preferences: sites you like and dislike, and why.
  8. Budget: a range lets us propose the scope that fits it.

Year-end budgeting: the proposed Productivity Mega Deduction

The Productivity Mega Deduction is a federal proposal for permanent immediate expensing of most depreciable property acquired on or after September 15, 2026. The Department of Finance backgrounder published on September 15, 2026 states that about two-thirds of investment in capital assets would be eligible (Department of Finance Canada).

  • It builds on the Productivity Super-Deduction from Budget 2025, which covers about 15% of investment in capital assets, including computers and data network infrastructure.
  • The measure is a government proposal. Finance Canada published draft legislative proposals for the Income Tax Act and Income Tax Regulations on the same day.
  • The Prime Minister's release of the same day lists software and computer equipment among the covered assets. The backgrounder excludes CCA classes 14 and 14.1 (for example, franchises, licences and goodwill) and does not mention websites.

Check with your accountant how your website, software and equipment spending is classified for capital cost allowance, and whether it would qualify once the measure becomes law, before you time the purchase.

FAQ

How much does a website cost in Canada?

The price depends on the number of unique page types, English and French versions, e-commerce, integrations, content and SEO setup. A landing page is the smallest scope, a corporate site is medium and an online store is the largest. A brief with these details gives you an accurate estimate.

What is the average cost of a small business website in Canada?

Averages mix very different scopes, so compare quotes by what they include: research, design, number of pages, languages, content, SEO setup and support. Most small businesses start with a corporate site of 5–30 pages or a landing page for one service.

How much does it cost to add French to a website?

French adds translation, separate URLs, a language switcher and hreflang tags. The cost grows with the number of pages and how often you update content, so list which pages need French in your brief.

How much does a Shopify website cost in Canada?

Shopify plans started at $37 CAD per month paid yearly (Basic) on September 27, 2026, plus card fees. Store setup, theme customization, apps, translation and SEO are separate project costs.

Can I deduct my website cost from taxes?

Ask your accountant. The federal Productivity Mega Deduction proposed on September 15, 2026 would cover most depreciable property acquired on or after that date, and the Prime Minister's release lists software among covered assets. Both government documents leave open how website development spending is classified.
